The Story of the Gîte
Who am I?
My first is a remnant of a family history with equine scents.
My second is the name of the prefix of a show-jumping horse stud.
My third is a Picard farmstead made of red bricks.
And my whole is a guaranteed change of scenery in a gîte combining charm and horses.

Les Écuries Val de Mai: a gîte with a rich historical past
Jennifer is proud to introduce her childhood farm.
She has extraordinary memories there, and now she is ready to share them with you!
Les Écuries Val de Mai is located in the heart of a hamlet of 40 residents in Val de Maison, 15 km north of Amiens.
Today, 30 horses and ponies live in the stables.
Built in 1821, this farm had its V.I.P. period, having been used as a presidential hunting farm.
The farm was designed by the architect BQRL (unit of measurement), and the barn’s façade still bears his name.
In 2009, following her father’s passing, 26-year-old Jennifer became the owner of her childhood farm. She set out to restore and enhance it completely.
Let’s go back in time to discover the love she has for this farmstead.
Driving the De Loreane, let’s revisit the period of 1914–1918…
Jennifer’s maternal great-grandfather lived in Doullens, a town north of Amiens, near Talma.
He made his fortune selling wine.
To invest wisely, he purchased nearly all the farms in Val de Maison, including Les Écuries Val de Mai.
And that’s how Les Écuries Val de Mai became part of Jennifer’s life!
The Sweet Memory of Childhood
When Jennifer’s parents got married in 1976, her maternal grandmother encouraged them to take over one of her farms in Val de Maison.
Jennifer’s father had always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian.
But…
Coming from a family of farmers, with no higher education, he had to give up his dream. Reluctantly, he pursued a career in farming instead.
He had a deep love for horses.
A former show jumping rider, he spent long hours galloping through the Picardy countryside.
In a corner of his heart, he held onto the dream of running a recognized breeding stable.
In retirement, he finally made it come true… He hired a rider and a groom to train the 27 young horses he had bred under the Val de Mai name.
Jennifer fulfilled her dream as well…
On this large farm, she built and claimed several spaces that belonged only to her!
From a very young age, she immersed herself in decoration:
A cabin in the pastures, a barn converted into an apartment, beautiful play areas…
At 16, she took over another part of the vast farm—the Loft, as she called it.
It was the former grain attic!
Upstairs, she set up a mattress and a small portable TV.
In the summer, she slept up there.
The setting wasn’t very healthy: raw bricks, dirty, unpleasant.
But it didn’t matter, Jennifer already has her own little house.
Taking Over Les Écuries Val de Mai, No Matter What
Jennifer’s emotional attachment to this property is so strong that she asks to inherit the farm, even though it requires extensive renovation work.
“The stone never dies!”
Jennifer acts out of love for the place—the family story will endure over time.
A winning combination emerges:

“You’re crazy! All the roofs need to be redone!”
“How are you going to secure financing?”
Even her notary is skeptical.
No matter—Jennifer’s insight and determination will take care of the rest!
Les Écuries Val de Mai include 38 stalls, a vast indoor arena, and a riding arena.
In memory of her father, Jennifer wants to bring his breeding program back to life.
So she buys back some of the horses he had sold.
Then, she wants to renovate the entire house. In fact, she has been planning this restoration since she was 12 years old.
The house remains in its original state—her father never carried out any work on it.
An Insatiable Appetite for Renovation
In 2012, Jennifer began renting out her gîtes at La Duckerie, in Tamerville—and she loved it.
That’s how she decided to approach the Val de Mai farm as well!
“I’m going to reclaim it and carry out renovations. I’ll be at home, I won’t have to deal with tenants who don’t pay and cause damage anymore. I’ll finally be able to make it as beautiful as I’ve always dreamed!”
In 2013, over the course of a few months, Jennifer:
Sanded, repainted, and blasted the ceilings; replaced the flooring
Redid the roof, the heating system, and two bathrooms
Completely replaced the window and door frames, as well as the kitchen and its tiling
Knocked down a wall between the kitchen and the living room to create a large open space
Renovated the crumbling front steps and built a terrace at the back of the house…
Expanded, the house now has incredible charm.
The upper floor, with its exposed beams, still remains. One day it will be redone—perhaps with a home cinema or a playroom for the children.
The Adventure of the gîte Les Écuries de Val de Mai Begins
Summer 2013: the gîte opens!
At that time, only the house is available.
And, against all expectations, it is a great success from the very beginning.
But… there are only 4 bedrooms.
Only 8 to 10 people can stay in this otherwise very large house.
The main room is huge, covering 50 m², so it is becoming urgent and essential to add more rooms.
Jennifer launches a second “renovation and development” phase!
At the time, her father had created an apartment to house the rider.
The structure was already there.
However, the décor needed to be completely rethought. This new space needed a soul.
No sooner said than done: the year-round rental is stopped and replaced with seasonal rental.
And so began a major restructuring project, resulting in 9 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
And she doesn’t stop there…
In 2018, Jennifer converts the former rider’s clubhouse into a beautiful, spacious game room with a pool table, foosball table, and bar.
She also adds a bedroom with its own bathroom and toilet.
As an anecdote, in its first life during her great-grandfather’s time, this game room used to serve as
the cow milking room!
In this magnificent Picardy farmhouse, Val de Mai, there are now three nearby independent units. They can accommodate up to 35 people!
A true haven of peace, completely private, with a huge garden—and just 1 hour 30 minutes from Paris.
What an inspiring place to relax with family or friends!
Home from the heart
As you’ve understood, Jennifer has dreamed of renovating this house since her earliest childhood. Her emotional attachment to it is incredibly strong.
When asked what future she envisions for her farmhouse, she is unequivocal:
“Even in the face of serious financial difficulties, I will never part with my childhood farm!
It’s a family treasure. I will show it to my children and keep it alive for as long as possible!
And I want to thank all the guests who come every weekend. Thank you for appreciating this place—it’s a wonderful form of recognition.”
Driven by a constant desire to evolve, wherever Jennifer looks on the property, she sees possibilities:
A small bedroom in the dovecote next to the pond
Additional work to create 3 or 4 more bedrooms in the apartment
A new roof for the stables, with skylights installed
And her ultimate dream… the famous loft! Above the game room, with a magnificent 200 m² space, vaulted in red brick.
It will take Jennifer and Sébastien a full year to complete the project.
They haven’t yet decided whether they will take on the work themselves or hire a construction company.
The couple is waiting for the right moment – perhaps even to return and live there!
Wait! It’s Not Over Yet! The Val de Mai gîte Keeps Surprising Us!
We love Jennifer’s bubbling energy! She shares her upcoming projects:
“There’s this large barn along the pond. We’re planning to convert part of it into a beautiful relaxation area with a spa and a real hammam.
On the other side, we’ll also create a reception hall that meets public venue standards.”

The other farms of Val de Maison still belong to Jennifer’s family—you might even meet her farmer uncle at the end of the hamlet.
Family ties have come full circle, and today, the neighbor of the gîte Les Écuries Val de Mai is none other than Jennifer’s cousin.
Marion Bacrot and her partner Grégoire offer their clients high-quality organic sourdough bread. Entirely handmade, it is baked on-site in a wood-fired oven.
This couple of farmers and bakers—self-proclaimed “grain growers-bakers”—grow the wheat, harvest it, and turn it into flour to create this delicious bread.
You’ll be able to enjoy it with great pleasure—but be careful… it’s by reservation only!
